In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Ford Expedition Max achieved a “Acceptable” rating - the second highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The Lincoln Navigator L has not been tested.

The Ford Expedition Max’s rear backup camera has a standard washer for maintaining a clear view under various conditions. In contrast, the Lincoln Navigator L does not offer a rear camera washer, meaning its effectiveness relies on manual cleaning by the user when necessary.

Both the Expedition Max and the Navigator L have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available all wheel drive.

Warranty

There are almost 7 times as many Ford dealers as there are Lincoln dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Expedition Max’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than Lincoln vehicles. With 13 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Ford higher than Lincoln.

Tires and Wheels

The Expedition Max has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Navigator L; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the Expedition Max’s turning circle is .6 feet tighter than the Navigator L’s (43.3 feet vs. 43.9 feet).

Chassis

The Ford Expedition Max may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 250 to 500 pounds less than the Lincoln Navigator L.

The front grille of the Expedition Max uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Navigator L doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Expedition Max has 2.9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Navigator L (175 vs. 172.1).

The Expedition Max has 3.5 inches more front headroom, .4 inches more front legroom, .4 inches more front hip room, 2.1 inches more rear headroom, .6 inches more rear hip room and .1 inches more third row shoulder room than the Navigator L.

Model Availability

The Expedition Max is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Navigator L doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
